Mr. Nwenyi, 18 years old, said his brothers, then in fourth and sixth grade, are bright but they had difficulty with online instruction.
“I kept thinking, ‘What’s happening across the city for kids who don’t even have someone like me, an older presence, to help them?’” said Mr. Nwenyi, who is now a senior at the prestigious city high school.
Last spring, Mr. Nwenyi and Stuyvesant classmates Ian Lau, Joyce Lin and Subyeta Chowdhury launched Educove, a free tutoring service connecting teens from city high schools with students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The program targets mostly low-income children in need of academic support. Offering virtual, largely one-on-one instruction, the tutors now teach about 75 city public school students, Mr. Nwenyi said. Tutors must apply for the volunteer work. Parents can request a tutor for their child through the Educove website.
